  • Can I use an over-the-counter diagnostic tool?

While these are great for reading common problems, they aren’t suitable for complex issues. Plus, they are only designed to read codes that cause the warning lights to come on.

  • I know a programmer, why can’t they fix my car?

There are a lot of programming languages out there. However, the type of programmer that you are talking about is probably not the kind of programmer you’ll need. Vehicles run on proprietary coding systems that are known by most computer programmers.

  • Why doesn’t the warning light come on if a problem exists in my vehicle?

While a faulty component will definitely cause a warning light to appear, there are times when the car can make adjustments through the computer. As such, the lights won’t come on because the vehicle is still “running fine.”

  • Can’t I buy a programmer to fix my car?

Sure! These tools are available to be purchased by anyone willing to spend the money on the tool and the services (computer codes) required to run them. Unfortunately, most of these programmers cost upwards of $3,000 and require an annual subscription to the dealer to work. In some cases, you may need a dealer ID to work with the tools.
